Save the Bees (Because the Bees Save Us)

“The flower doesn’t dream of the bee. It blossoms, and the bee comes.” – Mark Nepo

Gardens need honeybees, and we need gardens; its as simple as that. Yes, bees are a menace when they are buzzing in your ear when you are trying to enjoy dinner outside. Yes, they hurt like a bi*@! when they sting. BUT, bees are vital for our survival, and unfortunately, every year honeybees are dying at an alarming rate. So what do honeybees do for us, and why should we try to save them? Continue reading “Save the Bees (Because the Bees Save Us)”

What is the EPA (and why do we care)?

“The earth is what we all have in common.” – Wendell Berry

I’m going to be perfectly honest: when we started this journey, I knew there was an agency who’s sole purpose was to protect the environment. However, three months ago if someone approached me and started talking about the EPA, I would not have known what that was. Call me stupid, but as a teacher, acronyms are my life (ACTFL, IEP, LFS…oye!) and it is difficult enough to remember all of those let alone the names of all of the government agencies. YEA RIGHT. Anyway, you cannot turn on the news today without hearing some mention of the Environmental Protection Agency. So, why is everyone so heated about cuts to EPA funding? And why the HELL should I care? Here’s why…the environment. Let me explain this in layman’s terms.  Continue reading “What is the EPA (and why do we care)?”

The Environment is Changing (and so are we)

“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. Its not.” Yes, I am quoting the Lorax – one of my favorite Dr. Seuss characters. Maybe I love the Lorax so much because he is an environmentalist at heart, or maybe it is because he cares a whole awful lot about everything. Whatever the reason, this beloved character has inspired this post. The Going Green Couple is evolving, and we need your help! Continue reading “The Environment is Changing (and so are we)”

Spring Cleaning: a green cleaning routine

Ah, Saturday morning. This might be my favorite time of day, on my favorite day of the week. Mrs. GGC here – writing this post from my preferred lunch spot, noshing on a delicious vegetarian burger and sweet potato fries. YUM. But, that’s not why I’m writing this post. Every Saturday morning, I take an hour or two to do a deep clean of our house. You know how it is. A busy work week leaves little time for laundry, vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, disinfecting, etc. I am a self-proclaimed neat freak (good luck to my future children) and I like for our house to look like it could be featured in Home and Garden magazine. It must be clean, organized, and welcoming at all times. Therefore, I am LOVING this month’s challenge because it has inspired us to find innovative ways to clean our home the “green way”. It also coincides with the start of spring, which means SPRING CLEANING! So without further ado, welcome to our home! Continue reading “Spring Cleaning: a green cleaning routine”

DIY Easy Green Glass Cleaner

DIY Green Window Cleaner

It’s Monday, and that sucks. But, this post does not! Mr. GGC and I are here to save the day. This weekend, I spent some time cleaning the house – an activity that many people despise. Not me. I LOVE cleaning (I get it from my mama). I find it to be therapeutic and so satisfying when I can step back and instantly see the results of my labor. I went through my usual routine of vacuuming, washing dishes, doing laundry, dusting etc. However, I did do ONE thing a little differently — I decided to use an eco-friendly window cleaner in place of my name brand go-to cleaner. The best part? We made it ourselves! Continue reading “DIY Easy Green Glass Cleaner”

9 Common Household Cleaners and Their Dangerous Chemicals

Chemicals – those complex, unrecognizable ingredients  that we learned about in high school science class. They are present in long lists on just about every household product that we use – but, no one ever really bothers to read them. Am I right? I do it all the time.
