A Green Home Makeover (live smart)

“Home is the nicest word there is.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder

Mr. GGC and I love our home; how it looks, how it feels and where it is located are all representative of who we are. As much as we love our home, we often dream of the day when we will move into our forever home. When we think of this place, we see: lots of land, an herb garden, a big eat-in kitchen, the best appliances, lots of windows to let in natural light…the list goes on and on. We want our next house to be comfortable, safe and eco-friendly. So what can we do in the meantime to give our current home a “green facelift”? Read on. Save the Bees (Because the Bees Save Us)

“The flower doesn’t dream of the bee. It blossoms, and the bee comes.” – Mark Nepo

Gardens need honeybees, and we need gardens; its as simple as that. Yes, bees are a menace when they are buzzing in your ear when you are trying to enjoy dinner outside. Yes, they hurt like a bi*@! when they sting. BUT, bees are vital for our survival, and unfortunately, every year honeybees are dying at an alarming rate. So what do honeybees do for us, and why should we try to save them? Continue reading “Save the Bees (Because the Bees Save Us)”

Spring Cleaning: a green cleaning routine

Ah, Saturday morning. This might be my favorite time of day, on my favorite day of the week. Mrs. GGC here – writing this post from my preferred lunch spot, noshing on a delicious vegetarian burger and sweet potato fries. YUM. But, that’s not why I’m writing this post. Every Saturday morning, I take an hour or two to do a deep clean of our house. You know how it is. A busy work week leaves little time for laundry, vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, disinfecting, etc. I am a self-proclaimed neat freak (good luck to my future children) and I like for our house to look like it could be featured in Home and Garden magazine. It must be clean, organized, and welcoming at all times. Therefore, I am LOVING this month’s challenge because it has inspired us to find innovative ways to clean our home the “green way”. It also coincides with the start of spring, which means SPRING CLEANING! So without further ado, welcome to our home! Continue reading “Spring Cleaning: a green cleaning routine”

DIY Easy Green Glass Cleaner

DIY Green Window Cleaner

It’s Monday, and that sucks. But, this post does not! Mr. GGC and I are here to save the day. This weekend, I spent some time cleaning the house – an activity that many people despise. Not me. I LOVE cleaning (I get it from my mama). I find it to be therapeutic and so satisfying when I can step back and instantly see the results of my labor. I went through my usual routine of vacuuming, washing dishes, doing laundry, dusting etc. However, I did do ONE thing a little differently — I decided to use an eco-friendly window cleaner in place of my name brand go-to cleaner. The best part? We made it ourselves! Continue reading “DIY Easy Green Glass Cleaner”

9 Common Household Cleaners and Their Dangerous Chemicals

Chemicals – those complex, unrecognizable ingredients  that we learned about in high school science class. They are present in long lists on just about every household product that we use – but, no one ever really bothers to read them. Am I right? I do it all the time. Well – we do, and we are here today to tell you that the chemicals found in our every day cleaning products can be detrimental to the environment and our personal health.  Continue reading “9 Common Household Cleaners & Their Dangerous Chemicals”
