7 Low-Maintenance Houseplants

I have what some professional gardener’s may call a “brown thumb”. When it comes to designing bouquets or picking the most beautiful flowers for our tiny garden, I have a gift – an “eye” for color and aesthetic. However, I cannot seem to keep my plants alive. Mr. GGC is the green thumb – he knows how to plant and tend to our succulents, Black-eyed Susan, and indoor spider plants. Being an environmentalist (a “greenie” as we like to call it), I think there is something really beautiful and calming about bringing the outdoors inside of the home. Many of my decorative pieces are fake – and though they are pleasing to the eye – we are missing out on two very important factors: scent and air purification. So what are the best, fool-proof indoor plants for the “horticulturally challenged?” Continue reading “7 Low-Maintenance Houseplants”

5 Mosquito Repellent Plants

Mrs. GGC here – raise your hand if you are sick and tired of getting eaten alive by pesky mosquitos every summer? I dread that first muggy night when the bloodthirsty bastards come out to play. Mr. GGC tries to act cute, joking about how they only come for me because I’m oh so sweet. Love you boo, but this is no joking matter! Mosquitos have ruined too many BBQs and outdoor parties for me, and its about time that we stop the madness. I hate bug spray — it stinks, its sticky and it rarely works. Citronella candles? HAH – what a joke. I could walk outside in a turtle neck, high socks and jeans, and I would STILL end up with bites all over me. What am I to do? Look to Mother Nature to help a girl out.  Continue reading “5 Mosquito Repellent Plants”

DIY Composting for a Healthy Garden

Well, Mr. GGC was back for 1 post, and just like that he needs another break. Preface: he’s okay, thank goodness. On Friday, he was involved in a car accident (passenger) – everyone made it out okay, except for the car. He has some whiplash and possibly a small concussion, so no more writing for him for a few days at least. Mamma mia! Life certainly is a crazy ride.

But back to the purpose of this post – reducing waste and keeping your garden healthy through composting. Now, I know what you are probably thinking: composting? That’s a lot of work. That’s gross. I don’t wanna…Though making compost takes some patience, it is actually a simple process that just makes sense! Why throw your vegetable and plant scraps away when you can use them to help your garden grow? Continue reading “DIY Composting for a Healthy Garden”

7 Superfoods to Fight the Common Cold

Have you ever thought about how much money we spend on medications every year? Americans spend more on pharmaceuticals each year than any other country (approximately $1,000 per the average person). Now, consider how this medicine is packaged. Most pills come in plastic bottles, or are individually wrapped in hard plastic. So, not only are we hurting our wallets, but the more medicine we purchase, the more plastic we use – since plastic isn’t biodegradable, we are hurting the environment every time we throw away those empty pill bottles. So, what if we changed the way we thought about food and started eating foods that could help ward off illnesses? We would save money and help the environment at the same time! Sounds easy right? That’s because it is. Here are 7 superfoods to get you started on your journey to healthy…

Important Disclaimer: Always seek the advice of a healthcare professional. If your illness progresses, make an appointment with your doctor. These superfoods may not replace all traditional medications, but will likely be used as a supplement. Continue reading “7 Superfoods to Fight the Common Cold”

All-Natural Easter Egg Dyes

Getting ready to throw out those old vegetables? Is your fruit too bruised for eating? Reduce your waste and use these in-edibles to create an all-natural dye for your Easter eggs! I used to love dying eggs as a kid. It was the perfect combination of science, art and food. As an adult without any children, I still enjoy decorating eggs to use as a centerpiece for my Easter table. You can even blow out the inside of the egg using a heavy pin and keep the colored shells as a scent-free decoration. But, I’m tired of using those cheap looking Easter dyes from the grocery store. This year, let’s try using a natural approach. This will keep you (and even your children) entertained for hours.  Continue reading “All-Natural Easter Egg Dyes”

DIY Easy Green Glass Cleaner

DIY Green Window Cleaner

It’s Monday, and that sucks. But, this post does not! Mr. GGC and I are here to save the day. This weekend, I spent some time cleaning the house – an activity that many people despise. Not me. I LOVE cleaning (I get it from my mama). I find it to be therapeutic and so satisfying when I can step back and instantly see the results of my labor. I went through my usual routine of vacuuming, washing dishes, doing laundry, dusting etc. However, I did do ONE thing a little differently — I decided to use an eco-friendly window cleaner in place of my name brand go-to cleaner. The best part? We made it ourselves! Continue reading “DIY Easy Green Glass Cleaner”

9 Common Household Cleaners & Their Dangerous Chemicals

9 Common Household Cleaners and Their Dangerous Chemicals

Chemicals – those complex, unrecognizable ingredients  that we learned about in high school science class. They are present in long lists on just about every household product that we use – but, no one ever really bothers to read them. Am I right? I do it all the time. Sure Ammonium Hydroxide  sounds scary – but it is in so many products. How bad could it really be? Who cares? Well – we do, and we are here today to tell you that the chemicals found in our every day cleaning products can be detrimental to the environment and our personal health.  Continue reading “9 Common Household Cleaners & Their Dangerous Chemicals”
